Colorado Adventure Guides is pleased to have the chance to work with Always Chose Adventures this

winter. We are honored to have the opportunity to help the ACA community venture into the outdoors

safely by delivering avalanche safety training and survival to your team this winter.

Backcountry travel can be a daunting undertaking as it’s not just as easy as grabbing your gear and

heading to the ski lift. There are many variables to think about while traveling in the backcountry and

there is a natural progression of courses to help you with your journey. We have designed this course to

help you with your first steps in the field. In this this introductory course to help you learn the skills

necessary to be confident in venturing into and staying safe in the backcountry. Our hands-on methods of

teaching will give you the confidence necessary for traveling in the back country and surviving in a cold

weather environment. It is essential that you are prepared when things don't go as planned and prepare

for a survival situation. Topics include but not limited to;

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN:

- Intro to Avalanche Awareness

- Intro to trip planning and terrain selection

- Use of beacons, shovels, and probes

- Intro to risk management in the

backcountry

- Constructing a shelter

- Building a fire

- Personal protection (clothing,

equipment) and cold weather

management

- Basic Navigation and communication

- Recognizing and preventing cold

weather injuries

Itinerary

8:00AM – 4:00PM

We will meet at the Herman’s Gulch trailhead CAG gear up, and head to the field. We will spend the day in field

instruction where we turn the backcountry into an experiential classroom to hone your companion rescue skills.

Course Fee Includes

- Course Instructor/s (6:1 maximum guide to student ratio)

- Use of Ortovox Avalanche Safety Gear if needed (beacon, shovel, probe, pack)

- Snowshoes if needed

Course Fee Does Not Include

- Food

- Clothing and gear (See recommended gear under Trip Planning

- Transportation to designated meeting place
