Fatbiking In Leadville, Colorado

Some of my favorite fatbiking trails are located in Leadville, Colorado. Great single track, the Mineral Belt Trail, and Tennessee Pass Nordic Center all make great places to take your fatbike in the snow!

Best Single Track – Colorado Mountain College

If you’re looking for AMAZING single track fatbiking this is the place for you! The trails are groomed and maintained. They weave narrowly through towering pine trees and wind up and down the foothills. The grades are mellow enough for epic snow riding! You can access these trails by parking at the Climax Molybdenum Building at Colorado Mountain College, Leadville Campus. You’ll begin by going past the green cattle style gate and the world is your canvas from there! As of the date of this blog there is about 15 miles of single track with many more miles planned. You can easily enjoy a couple hours of riding or more if you’re taking your time and soaking up the scenery. I haven’t ridden these trails outside of the snow season (which can last awhile in Leadville!) but I assume they are still worth visiting.

Most Famous Fatbiking Trail – Mineral Belt Trail

The Mineral Belt Trail is an 11.6 mile paved path around the beautiful city of Leadville, CO! There are several parking areas and access points to the trail. This is a multi use trail so beware of other recreationalists on snow shoes, cross country skis, and just trudging along in their boots! Part of this trail meanders through the city and part of it is more remote through the trees. No matter what time of year you’re in Leadville this is a must do trail!

Most Epic Ride

In a recent visit to Leadville we stopped in at the newest bike shop in town, Leadvelo Bicicasa, the owner, Rafael, gave us some insight on riding the roads on the east side of town. The Cloud City Wheelers put on an event each year called the Leadville Winter Mountain Bike Series and they too have an east side ride. While I haven’t ridden the area as of the time I’m writing this blog I can say I’m excited to do so. The roads offer miles and miles of partially maintained routes which make a perfect epic escape on your fatbike!

Turquoise Lake

Riding a loop around Turquoise Lake is nothing short of spectacular. This beautiful body of water is stunning when covered in ice and snow. I’ve been told you’ll encounter dog sled teams on your ride! Imagine…pedaling along in lush fluffy snow on your fatbike. In the distance you hear the paws and panting of a team of sled dogs. As they pass you can feel the power and energy as they race along the snow covered roads. WOW! What a rush!

If you’re wanting to take a ride on a dog sled or even learn how to “drive” your own dog sled you can check out Alpine Adventures!

Thanks for reading about fatbiking in Leadville. It’s a great little mining town that offers some really cool outdoor adventures! Don’t forget to check out my other blogs!
